(Mains) Power Supply Issues

I'm in Spain and we have notorious power issues.

I recently had an issue where my system became pretty unstable even after rebooting the problem seemed to re-occur within a few hours or so.

I, eventually gave up for a day, as the system refused to even properly boot, giving me an intermittent memory error at first, and then it started simply refusing to power up the VGA.

The strangest thing that seemed to fix it is that I manually removed the power cord from the back of the PC, until the motherboard's LED died. Then I replaced it again and the system booted up just fine.

I've now bought a power-surge protector and have a UPS on order.

The power here has previously killed my PSU's outright, I should have invested in a surge-protector sooner... I know, but I'm going to make sure that I don't get bitten again by this - especially as I have a new system on order.

I'd like to know if anyone else suffers from dodgy power supply (from the grid), and what steps they take to safe-guard against it? (I'm sure it's worse in Spain (at least where I am) than the UK), but I'm sure some rural areas in the UK have the same problem.

I do have a vague recolection of someone with a similiar story on here and a UPS was the solution they went with.

The symptoms you've described could also be consistant with faulty memory though.
