Hi all, my new pc arrives in 1 hours time so I am wondering what programs are essential or very handy to download or buy to keep your pcs in tiptop condition.ie, anti viruses etc.

Thanks!

security essentials for anti virus

once in a while run malwarebytes

maybe ccleaner once in a while too

thats enough imo

I agree with the above..

Plus, keep these up to date...

Windows Update
Java Runtime www.java.com/getjava/index.jsp
Adobe Flash

Personally I use Firefox, then insatll Adblock Plus (choose Easylist Subscription)
Or Chrome, then install Adblock

^These strip out most of the popups etc from websites

My essential programs:

Chrome (with adblock+ and flashblock)
MS Security essentials

Done :D (Chrome comes bundled with flash now too)

Yeh run ccleaner every now and then, but not essential.

Agree with the 3 folk above, no need for anything else especially if it's Windows 7- then you don't need a defrag util as Windows 7 is pretty damn good at covering that :)

Just don't bother with the Registry Cleaning part of CCleaner. To quote myself: "At best, it does nothing. At worst, it royally screws things up"

I found on some Windows 7 installs the schedules for the Disk Defrag weren't set automatically. In all cases the default is at some silly time in the morning. Best changing it at a time you know the PC is on! :)

Good point. You could always do it in safe mode though.

I always runs driver sweeper and CCleaner in safe mode if I have to.
