Major Graphics Card problem; help very gratefully received

Hi. I've developed a pretty serious problem with (what appears to be) my graphics card.

It is a Radeon 9650. I'm not entirely certain which specific model. Possibly a GT.

The problem, is that everytime I open an application which has 3D graphics, i.e. my games, the display goes haywire after a short peroid of time. It's almost like a patchwork quilt as the background with a strange pattern superimposed on it. Which is like the radii of a circle eminating from the very centre of the monitor. All in psychidelic colours (no, I haven't taken anything ;)). Also, I was seeing 'tearing', which looked somewhat like if one took a vertex of 3D model and pulled it miles away off screen. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get a screen shot of the problem.

This problem has only developed in the last few weeks, and has got progressively worse, until yesterday and today in which it has become unusable on anything but windows. The reason I think it is my graphics card, is simly because it only occurs when in a 3D environment.

I have tried certain things. I defragged my hard drive, run anti spy and anti virus, as a precaution. I've changed drivers. I was using the most up-to-date catalyst, 6.9 I believe, so I reverted back to 6.8, and even back to 6.3; no joy. I installed the .NET 2 framework, as per the instructions when installing the cat's. I also reverted all settings back to their defaults in the CCC.

Now I'm completely stumped. I would format, but I need to do a backup, besides, there's no guarantee it would fix the problem. On top of that, I've got a SATA hard drive, which requires some sort of floppy disk when formatting, and I haven't figured out how to yet. That's an entirely different matter tho.

Like I say, all your expert help would be most gratefully appreciated.

Thanks.

Sounds like a graphics card that is dying. I'd start looking for a replacement. You should be able to get plenty of cheap ATi AGP cards, that will give you a boost over what you have (or is it PCI, I'm not immediately familiar with that derivative of the 96x0 series).

When you can't get a screenshot, that indicates that it is almost certainly hardware-related problem.

I've just cleaned out the dust, quite difficult to get in at tbh, but I did an ok job I think.

Tried a couple of games, and not had any problems yet, but knowing my luck, it'll just be a honeymoon period, before it starts again.

Anyway. Best AGP card for under £100? My monitor only has a VGA port, but I've heard that DVI to AGP cables are available?

Thanks again.
