Major hardware failure

My PC has been running fine this past day. I noticed that there were some updates so I shut it down. I restarted it and I had CPU fan error (my rig is watercooled but I have it cabled so I don't normally have the fan error). I also noticed I couldn't hear my water pump going. I shut it down, opened up the case and checked everything. All seemed fine so I fired it up. When it started, my Enermax 720 started the fan alarm noise and flashing the LED. I took the PSU out, re connected everything and tried again, no change, though this time the water pump whirred into life.

I had a similar problem 2 years ago and had to get the PSU swapped, so I just spent 10 minutes putting in my spare (Enermax 400) and that just fires up the fans, then power cycles (I guess it's a failsafe mode like the 720W has). Water pump starts though.

Any idea what to try now?

Tomorrow I'm going to strip everything out, clean it all (as it's rather dusty) and carefully make sure everything is put back together right. Once that is done, if it still has the same problem I can only assume that something is tripping both PSUs so it'll be a case of slowly eliminating all hardware till I find the culprit.

a long and horrible process but that's probs the best way to go about it, especially if everything needs a clean anyway :p

OK so that work is done and I'm still not getting as far as a POST. The 720 goes into it's fault mode and the 400 just power cycles.

I'm thinking motherboard perhaps?
