hi all
i got something of a major problem with my PC that will eventually end up with me losing work or my temper.

basically i end up with total PC friezes, i have no control whatsoever, cant crtl alt del. can move mouse anything. its happened in vista and windows 7. im on windows 7 now and i works perfectly for me. (can we please not turn this into a windows 7 discussion, i genuinely need help)

i cant place my finger on a cause either, could happened when i open a webpage or play a video. as far as i can tell its random. (never happens when i play call of duty 5)

ive had the pc on for a day or so working fine in safe mode. but i still cant tell what causing it.
i can build pc's but im by no way a expert. don't think ive changed anything in bios so im not sure if that could cause it.

any ideas you lot have would be stunning. im having to turn down work because i cant get it done on time, with all these restart.

thanks all so much

Theo

So this is a new PC build then yeah?
Have you checked all you temps? CPU temp (CPUz) GPU temp (GPUz)
If you can, post a screen shot showing the info from CPUz main tab and memory tab (you can have 2 instances running at once) also a pic of your bios settings would help
I take it youve tried reseating all your components?

may be a silly question but what is the nature of the freeze?

Do windows stop responding ( you cant move/mimimise etc) and then shortly afterwards the mouse stops as well?

Does the whole thing lock up at once but still display information on screen and not restart itself?

or does the system lock up and then retsrat itself?

If its the first one, its probably cpu instability as ive leanred the hard way, go into the bios and check the spcs for your hardware with the figures in the BIOS, set things back to default if they have been changed

If its the second option its more than likely an overheating issue, you need to monitor your temps, clean out all dust make sure all fans are spinning and that there is good contact between the cpu and HSF

If its the third option then its more than likely a RAM issue, take both sticks out, and try different combinations of Sticks in, check your RAM voltage is correct in the BIOS as some boards like to undervolt ram should be around 2.1,also you may wanna up your NB voltage a bit if you are using more than 2 sticks

hope this helps

to answer deusexluminas questions. it locks up totally but still displays everything. as far as i can tell it a stops at once. it can sit there for hours frozen and not restart.

well ive reset everything in bios to defaults. funny thing is if i do a system restore and disable windows updates it workes fine for a few days. could jut be coincidence but thought i should mention it.

im using Asus P5q-E board and 4G.b.skill DDR2 (2 sticks) the volts are default now anyone know if i should change them to something else?

thanks again
theo

You really want to follow deusexlumina troubleshhoting advice as it' s a good place to start.

The only thing i would add is to, perhaps, monitor your voltages too as one of your voltages may be dropping below tolerance (Usually 5-10%).
