Major issues installing onto a P5E3

So, I've got a P5E3 and I can't install windows on it. Everything I try seems to go wrong at some point.

Firstly, I can't get it to recognise a DVD drive. I've tried two different DVD drives and two different IDE cables, with the jumpers set to slave, master and CS and it completely fails to boot off any CD. I've set Atapi CD as the first entry in the boot menu and nothing happens. The drives spin up, so I know they've got power, but the BIOS can't see it.

So, plan (b), I'll just install from USB. However, it refuses to boot from any USB stick that has Vista copied to it (http://kurtsh.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!DA410C7F7E038D!1665.entry) or any USB stick that's got BartPE on it. I can get it to boot if I use Unetbootin to make a Linux livecd, but nothing windows based. I've tried setting the type in the BIOS to Floppy, Auto, HDD, Forced FDD and CDRom on 3 different sticks, and still no dice. Failures range from it just not trying, though saying "disk error" to just thrashing the stick without actually doing anything (it's been doing that now for 30 mins straight on my BartPE one set in "floppy" mode).

Help!!?

Hold that press - I've got it to boot from the CD!

No idea how, some voodoo something. The Vista install CD still barfs it, but my BartPE CD seems ok - so might try something funky with that.
