Major issues with new build

Hi all

I recently built a new z690 system and had some issues with a faulty motherboard (there is a separate thread). That was resolved with a replacement and in terms of building the hardware all seemed well.

Problem is due to random instabilities I've spent a seriously unhealthy amount of time over the last couple of days trying in vain to install Windows 11, mb drivers, etc, etc and I'm just at a loss as to what the issues I'm facing are. I understand that it's new tech so could be some teething issues but tbh I'm starting to wonder if something else is going on as I've never experienced such pain setting up a system before, ever.

So here's what I've done:

Updated the bios to the latest version - no problems there.
Installed Windows 11 from a bootable flash drive:

I've actually done this 3 times now and each time I've faced having to force restart, hanging on the 'getting ready' or 'restarting' screens. I've seen a handful of bluescreen (or black screen but same text) during the course of installations/restarts, etc.

I managed to update Windows and even install latest gpu drivers.

But one thing that's worrying me is that I've had installs of drivers/software just freeze or hang on me without completing, so the progress bar will just stop half way through and nothing else happens - this has happened with multiple unrelated installers.

I've only tweaked a couple of settings in the bios that I know are safe. I have disabled xmp. I have removed one of my 16gb ram sticks after I noticed the orange led was solid on the mobo after a failed restart indicating a dram issue - but the issues are persisting.

Any help hugely appreciated as I'm at my wits end.

Here's the system

Asus z690 Gaming A Wifi D4
i7 12700kf (temp is 30c and it's been pegged there all day)
2 x 16gb Corsair (checked the codes on the supported RAM list on the Asus website and is supported)
850w Silverstone 80+ platinum PSU
Windows 11 is on a 970 evo 2TB
Msi 3090

Here's a stack trace from when I tried to install chipset drivers and the installer hung

I dunno man.....

Maybe try swapping the RAM around, 1 stick at a time, make sure its FIRMLY seated.

Check all the connections are in properly, all power cables, sata cables etc.

Do you have an alternative drive you can use just for testing?

Just gotta work though this all and start eliminating stuff. Its the only way.

ok so I hope I'm not speaking too soon but I think I've found the issue and tbh I never would have guessed it was something like this. I removed the main mb extension psu cable and just plugged in directly from the psu and all of a sudden everything seems to be working properly and a million times faster.

I've learnt so much about trouble shooting with this build.

Will update if I'm still having issues. Thanks mate.

Fingers crossed, you'd assume things would either be connected and working, or not connected. You'd be amazed how stuff will "sort of still work" with a bad connection.

Yeah it was deffo that cable. WTF. I never would have thought it would cause issues like I've seen but there you go. I guess it was working on a sort of low power state the whole time but like you say I would expect it to either work or not work!

in all honesty, just install windows 10 on it.

Windows 11 is new and has a ton of issues still.

you are early adopting hardware as well as OS. it is really not great as you are not sure if it is HW or OS bugs as you dont have a steady state to reference to.

wipe and go with W10 mate

I did consider that at one point but persevered as had been using W11 without issue for a couple of months on previous build. All good now anyway, got a new cable on the way.

never ever update to the latest bios, i did recently on my x570 rebuild and had major problems with everything i tried to do, weird windows behaviour and loads of restarts, soon as i rolled back to the second latest bios all my weird problems stopped and my system is much more stable, personally i'd look to roll back your bios.
