Hi all

I decided to upgrade my pc with some new components, the rest were in my older pc and worked 100% fine.

i brought an:

12700k
MSI MAG Z690 Edge wifi ddr4
corsair vegeneance rgb pro 16gb
new m2 ssd

and i’m using my existing power supply and gpu (rtx 3080 ti founders edition)

My issue is so weird…

- if i boot the computer without the gpu installed i can access windows and bios no problem. this is with the dp lead into the main motherboard.
- if i then close down, install the gpu, switch the display port lead over to the gpu and boot up it will work fine. this includes running games on the gpu, testing it’s setting with cpuz etc
- if i then reboot or shutdown it will go to a black screen and not show windows. it’s like the pc is on but refuses to output video to the gpu
- to fix it i have to unplug the gpu, reboot to windows again and then repeat

i’m wondering if something is up with the power settings for the motherboard pcie but can’t see anything yet that has any effect. i’ve also tried reinstalling windows but that doesn’t seem to work. i’ve also tried resetting the cmos.

i’m tearing my hair out does anyone have any ideas?

What psu and gpu? Is psu old?
Soz, saw gpu in post.

hi guys, thanks for the replies!

gpu seems seated correctly, i’ve just had another look and it always works until you reboot - then will never display windows again until it’s removed and replugged in again.

psu is 750 watts, it is a bit older but not sure how old. but it seems to be able to cope fine until i reboot, then the cycle repeats again

I may have just fixed it - i did some google about my specific motherboard and multiple people were having a similar issue. apparently the board is very wonky with display port leads. i’ve switched over to HDMI and it’s working perfectly so far. will keep testing!

Nice one!

Still very odd how it works on the first boot after gpu installation.

At least it booted alright, some can't even get their PC to boot with DP :o

There's been talk that it might be due to non-compliant cables or protocol incompatibilities, sometimes a certified replacement cable, or a BIOS or VBIOS update fixes the issues, but idk.
