Hi all....hope someone can help!!

Yesterday, my daughter was playing on my machine when she paddy'd and kicked it, after a few minutes it rebooted itself into windows and carried on running....then rebooted again. I shut it down and left it til she went to bed then tried booting it up again, each time it got just after POST then rebooted, i did this a few times before checking the BIOS where i noticed the chip temp was at 120 degrees  as the fan was not spinning. When she booted it she dislodged the cable loom and it jammed in the fan!!

Anyway, i got a new fan today, installed it and went to boot up, it got past the XP splashscreen then locked up with my mouse cursor in the middle of a black screen but with no power to the mouse or keyboard. I messed around with the BIOS and reset the CMOS and tried safemode but nothing worked :(

After a while messing i reformated a small 20gb drive that i use to share files between the 3 machines we have in our house and installed XP onto that hoping to get onto my C drive and rescue all my personal files (photos, work stuff etc) but i cant do it. I can see all 3 partitions on the drive (its a 250gb SATA) and i can access them all except for 'my documents' on the old windows drive, it says it is inaccessable when i try. Also, the folder is listed as empty when it shoud have about 20gb of stuff on it.

My question is this:
How can i access this folder to rescue whats on there? And if i cant, if i run setup on that partition but choose to leave the partition intact (do not format it etc) will my docs still be there after setup?

Please help anyone!!!

Cheers

I've seen files appear to have vanished when recovering from another HDD. You could try taking ownership of the parent folder and apply the changes to every subfolder/files, i'm pretty sure i've had to do this for the same problem in the past.

Thanks for all the help folks, got all my files saved nicely!

One last thing, is there any way i can save all my emails without being able to get into outlook?

The full version of outlook?
Just grab the outlook.pst file from my documents\"username"\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook
