Hi, I have a pc here that when turns on emits a constant series of short beeps.

Specs:

P4 dual core 3.2
gigabyte GA 8I865GME-775-RH motherboard
2GB ram

The owner has had it for around 3-4 months, it's usually fine.

I've tried a different PSU, tried erasing cmos, unpluging all wires, removing ram and expansion cards.

I've narrowed it down to either the CPU or the motherboard. When I remove the +12v four pin connector from the board it does not make the beep, nor does it make any beeps when I remove the CPU.

I have another CPU here, socket 478 P4 3.0 HT. Will this fit in this board?

Also what do you guys think is the problem, cpu or board.

He's never had it overclocked and when it turned off and made the beeps the CPU was cool not hot. The case ventilation is adequate.

the board is a socket 775 so the 478 cpu will not fit, it could be the board but no way to tell unless you have another board to test you cpu on.

ok, but it's unlikely to be the cpu isnt it from what ive told you. its never been overclocked, always well ventilated, cool even when the problem happened.

i dunno what to do now.
