MAJOR ROUTER ISSUE

Hey all, have skybroadband with skys on sagam router.

Connected I have iphone, ipad, WHS2011 Server, and my main windows 7 pc, also a macbook as well as 2 other windows 7 laptops my house mates use, also 7 IP cameras that only send data locally (obviously) to the server which monitors them.

When all this is running my 17mb connection becomes 0.42mb download and 0.002 upload - non of it is connecting to the net bar web browsing.

Iv just shut the server down and the cameras, I now get 16.1mb according to speedtest.net

What on earth is going on that would cause the router to choke ? the router is connected to 2x gigabit wired routers for the ip cameras (these are not exactly heavy load on the router just 640x480 images)

I phoned sky they said that my netstat should report less than 10, i have 30 odd, but i also have 30 or so when its just my main windows 7 pc is on and I get a 16mb connection.

Would I benefit from a pro router such as an ASUS RT n 56 for handling all the internal traffic and turn the router into a modem ? is the internal network data bandwidth the issue ?

All the internal traffic shouldn't be an issue unless the L2 switch inside the current router is painfully bad, which I doubt.

How about with just the IP cameras running?

Do you have the option of blocking the camera / servers IP / MAC addresses from accessing the internet?

Yeah good point i can block the cams mac address for the internet even though I dont think they are accessing it anyway.

Im upto the computers and 2 cameras running now and its fine, seems to be so far, Ill turn them on one by one and watch what happens.

How have you setup your "2 x gigabyte wired routers"??

ones an 8 port netgear ones a 5 port tp link, they are just 'auto setup' routers, like they turn 1 wire into 8 or 5 basically, lol. I assume they just port forward the attached devices, they do not appear in the sky routers attached devices list.

I don't mean to sound patronising, but are these other two routers just switches?

If so, something there must be either causing a loop or eating interweb bandwidth.

nah its fine i dont explain things very well/use correct terminology, yes switches sorry is what they are, not sure how they would conflict ? :/

The devices attached to them all receive unique IP address's so not sure why it would conflict.

I doubt there's anything conflicting.

As long as each switch has one cable running to the router and then just going out to individual devices it should, internally, be fine.

I'd start looking at your internet speed after blocking devices access to the net.

Well at most its 3 IP cameras ---> TP link switch ---> sky router

on the other side of things its 2 powerful computers (my main rig and the server) and 1 IP camera, IP player device, ---> Net gear switch ---> sky router.

As iv enabled devices one by one the net speed is dropping 1mb at a time, the camears are now blocked, only computers, wireless devices etc can connect.

It occours to me all the devices are connected to the Netgear which is connected by 1 cable to the router - this is only a 100mb link as the router sucks - problems here? only 10 megabytes per sec isnt that ?

Whats physically connected to the router is:

1) TP link GB with 3 cams
2) Netgear GB 2xPCs (my main rig and the server) and 1 IP camera, IP player device
3) A single IP camera
4) HTPC which streams just fine from the server.

Thats it, all the ports are now full - im concerned however the link between the netgear 8 port and the router being only 100mb - this the problem ?

Weird the sky router slows down as more stuff is turned on ?

EDIT: Just ordered the Asus RT-N56U Black Diamond, will see if that helps, if not I can just sell it on.

A 100mbit internal network connection isn't going to slow down your 16mbit Internet connection. It's going to be a case of plugging in one cable at a time to find out what's going on but from the looks of things you're doing this anyway?

By my count you have nine devices to connect to your router and two switches.

1. main rig
2. server
3. HTPC
4. IP player
5,6,7,8,9. 5x IP cameras

I would connect them like this:
Netgear switch - 5 x IP cameras, IP player
TP switch - main rig, server, HTPC

Connect router to TP switch. Connect TP switch to Netgear switch.

From my limited knowledge of switches, this should keep all but the internet traffic to the (gigabit) switches, without involving the router.

If it is still slow, try moving the server to the netgear switch.

OK I have the asus now......CANNOT get it working !!!!!!!!!!!! Been trying 2 hours now

I disabled dhcp on the sky, enabled on the asus, but it seems the asus wants me to enter all the sky log in details so it can control the 'modem', I don't want it to do this I just want it to fetch the Internet data off the sky router and also control the dhcp, but the only other mode it runs in is AP mode....which is useless as the sky will need dhcp enabled....which I don't want as the whole pont in buying it was so the asus could control internal data .....HELP how do I setup the sky sagam routerr as a modem and jus send the data to the asus :( :( :(

Ok still cannot make it work properly, managed to just turn it to AP mode now, sky is still the DHCP server, but have turned off the wireless.

How do I make this sky router just a modem? tried everything but it wont seem to work properly, why oh why can the asus not just read the IP off the sky auto and just fetch data? its so weird iv never seen a router without the option to just auto pick up data off the other sky router.

When I first got my Asus RT-N16 I spent hours trying to get it to connect, I thought the WAN port was faulty... someone told me to switch off the modem/router for 15mins and it established a connection right away after that. I don't know if that's related to your problem but thought I'd throw it in there just in case.

Thanks its just i cant even find how to make it setup, there doesnt seem to be an option to get wan from lan sort of thing , whhhaaat? :( what settings do u use ?

In my experience, trying to get bog-standard ADSL routers to do some sort of pass-thru to a more advanced router / firewall (that perhaps only have an Ethernet WAN port) only leads to headaches.

Best solution IMHO is to get a Vigor 120 DSL Modem. You can then put your DSL username / password into the Asus router (as a PPPoE connection) and ditch the other router. The Vigor 120 handles the PPPoE to PPPoA bridging.

Yeh this is what would be ideal however, its a sky router, so getting it to work is a nightmare, how succesful is it getting stuff to work now ? i.e. making sky accounts work with normal modems, something to do with MER connections ?
