Hey folks,

My brother is having a problem with his shuttle PC. At the moment he has XP service pack one installed on his pc. He not so recently tried to upgrade to service pack two and was met with an black screen and windows restored itself to service pack one or he had to restore it im not quite sure.

Now try as he might service pack two wont work. Has anyone ever heard of this problem before? Im totally stumped by it, as service pack one works alright but he wishes the added security of SP2

This pc has a Radeon graphics card in it as far as i know.
Could it be the processor or the motherboard?
Could it be the BIOS?

Radeon graphs card
amd 63 3400
Board: Shuttle Inc FN85
Bus Clock: 201 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG 03/08/2004

Thankyou for any help

As above poster said, do a clean install, also I find sometimes its a good idea to put SP2 in a folder and run from there rather than from CD or from MS updates.

I had a similar issue with my old A64 3200 on an ASUS KV8se. I tried installing sp2 and it wouldn't load back up and I had to restore it.

Looked into it and it sounded like it was some problem with DEP.

http://hardware.mcse.ms/archive20-2004-9-66734.html has some info on it (follow the first link to the MS page)

But I never actually bothered installing the fix and left my PC on SP1 so I can't vouch for it. PC has since has Vista installed and been given to the parents.

Might be worth a try to save a rebuild though.
