Make diesels sound better?

LOL. Any aftermarket exhaust you put on will, in all likelyhood, just make it louder.

The "tractor" noise is down the how unrefined the engine is, coupled with the way diesels work. You won't get rid of the noise short or getting rid of the car.

A) thats an HDi, which is far more refined than a mechanical XUTD block.
B) it sounds bloody awful, especially with that stupid dump valve.

No. Diesels will always sound compared to almost any petrol engine.
Agreed....

I guess you could get a really loud turbo, so the whistling sound from the turbo would be louder than the engine? Some people even put dump valves on dervs...

My 205TD is definitely more whistley after making the air intake a little less restrictive... It still sounds like a bloody tractor tho... :D

TBH, I'm not really too bothered about how my car sounds (or looks), I care more about how it drives... You could always just turn the radio up a little to drown out the tractor sound.

Make a D Turbo sound nice? That minicab sound makes the D Turbo the legend that it is :D
I love the sound of diesels, especially when they're accelerating, well at least in a good engine anyway - e.g. in mine, or the old man's C270CDi. (The Merc doesn't sound too pleasant while idling right enough).

Diesels just shouldn't have dump valves.

I know someone who has a 306DT (R reg - would that be phase 3?). He's had it resprayed and colour coded which makes it a really smart looking car.

He's done a bit of work to the engine too... upgraded turbo, front mount intercooler and yes... fitted a dump valve. It should be pushing out about 150bhp, he says.

I can appreciate the work he's put into it, but... just... why... it'll always sound like a tractor. And a bog standard GTi-6 will come along and whoop it left, right and center.

Aye the GTI-6 will handle better and outbrake it easily, but in terms of acceleration below 80-90mph, a 150bhp 1.9DT would have no problems keeping up with a GTI-6. The 6's aren't really fast cars by modern standards and the 1.9DT would have loads more torque and almost the same bhp.
