In Vista does anyone know how to set it so that any excel files that are referenced in a url open in excel rather than IE. I know that in XP you can do this via properties on the file association, which is to uncheck browse in same window. However vista seems to have very limited options for file associations.

If you enable the 'web' toolbar, im sure you can browse within excel, though its a long while since iv used 2003, and iv not needed to use it in 2007.

Why don't you Right Click the file and select Open With then select Excel and then select the tick box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of files".

EDIT: I might have not understood your problem correctly therefore my rubbish answer.

In a folder, do the following:

Tools > Folder Options

Go to the File Types tab.

Find XLS

Click on XLS

Click on Advanced

Click on 'Always Open in Separate Window'

Or at least it is something like that...I am at work and on an admin locked down machine at the minute so I can't check for myself! That is the right area to look in though.

/Edit You said Vista...Ignore me, apologies!

The issue I am trying to solve is when url's etc in IE point to an excel file I want it to open in excel rather than in IE. Poolybits' solution is ok for XP but I am trying to do the same thing in Vista.
