Why am havig so much difficulty doing this. I just have an image with a white background that I want to make transparent. I select the outer area in photoshop and select delete and it just makes it a grey sort of colour.

Its a PNG but ive tried it as GIF and also saving it as transparent for the web

A white and grey checkered background means that it will be transparent. Save it as a GIF and it should stay that way.

Try:

File>save as>and from format choose "CompuServe GIF" then click save. In the dialog box make sure "Transparency" is ticked then click OK and OK again.

Just tried it with a cut out of ceiling cat and it works
