I've ordered one on ebay but it says it will come next week.

Is there any reason why I can't just cut the ends off two usb cables I don't use and splice the same colour wires together?

You could in theory but not all manufacturers use the same colour coding. You could continuity test them with a multimeter or order one for next day delivery. worst case, most supermarkets and some petrol stations stock them if you needed one asap.

A guy after my own heart :)

I made a twin RCA backplate breakout from some old radio bits, a backplate grille and a CDROM audio cable which has the correct end plug for the Xonar AUX internal socket. Cost about 50p for some solder.

As said above I'd just go to the local supermarket if you're close. I bet the wire in such things its tiny a very fiddly, and I know fiddly wire!

I've modified several USB cables without issue. Just keep the unscreened section short and insulate all joints and everything should be fine.

Typically you'll find two thicker conductors, red (5v) and black (0v) along with two thinner conductors, white and green for the data+ and Data- respectively.

Schematics for the connectors for the connector pinouts are available if the wiring colours are non standard.
