Hey all

I know this is, mostly, the main topic around Windows 8 but I was looking at upgrading to Windows 8.1, the only thing putting me off is the whole start menu/desktop of the OS.

Have they done an update where you can literally get Windows 7 GUI within Windows 8.1? If not, I know there are a few apps out there that do this, any top recommendation(s)?

I'd like to upgrade, but I can't deal with the Metro constantly.

Sorry for the over repeated question :p

You can change some settings on the start menu which will log you straight into the desktop instead of the Metro GUI! You can also add a short cut to the taskbar listing the programs as you'd see them if you had the Win 7 startmenu.

Does that make sense?

I used some of the guides from here

Awesome, I was mainly looking for Desktop only and start menu and looks like what that guide has :)

Thanks!

I use classic shell for all of this. The amount of clients that cannot get used to win8, just installed as standard now pretty much.

It lets you hide hot corners as well, so it only ever shows the desktop really, the start menu can be set to a fairly user friendly windows 7 style.

I have a lockup here and their on it, but nothing to stop me from using it. My computer is a 6 year old ex file server, so to say the least, its not the best specced thing ever.

Don't forget on Win8.1 you have the option (right click on old desktop taskbar, then properties then navigation tab) and select the option to boot straight to the old desktop so you avoid Metro on startup.
