Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has announced he will retire from football at the end of the season.

'Maka', who won two Premier League titles during his five-year stay at Stamford Bridge, is currently captain of Paris St. Germain, whom he joined from the Blues on a free transfer in the summer of 2008.

Now 37, Makelele believes it is time to call it a day at the end of the current campaign.

One of Chelseas best signings imo, although in his later years

It still bugs me how Real treated him quite badly.

A good player, a very good buy for Chelsea.

Also, quite a nice bloke :)

Real Madrid said:
We will not miss Makélélé. His technique is average, he lacks the speed and skill to take the ball past opponents, and ninety percent of his distribution either goes backwards or sideways. He wasn't a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres. Younger players will arrive who will cause Makélélé to be forgotten.

I disagree with this, I thoght he was a pretty big part of the cog at Real, and they did miss him for a short while.

Vieira said the reason he didn't go to Real is 'cos he saw the lack of respect Makelele got there.

Great player, pretty much defined the DM role in football.

Why put another layer of gold paint on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?

Great quote from Zidane
