Making 2 places have exactly the same files etc?

I have a folder on my PC that i also backup on my external hard drive. Thing is, sometimes when i copy and paste over to the external hard drive there is a difference in what is saved etc!!

Is there a free program i can use to make sure the Folder on my hard drive is backed up on to the External drive 'Exactly'. Thanks

Richcopy. You could also use Synctoy but it doesn't pick up some hidden system files like thumbs.db by default. Not that you need to copy the files it misses, but if you want to do a byte v byte count it won't tally up.

synkron is an opensource tool for doing just this and works very well

Can Richcopy and Synkron both be used as backup system?

Well, by definition any tool or combination of tools that replicates files can be used as a backup system. For a one time, manual backup or lots of files I tend to use RichCopy. If you want something scheduled then Windows has a decent backup solution built in.
