Making 2 VLANs talk?

Hi,

I've browsed the forum for years, but only now needed to post something, in a hope somebody can enlighten me.

If you have a switch with 2 VLANs and lets say each VLAN has a different IP range....

How would you make them talk? As in, so any machine on VLAN 1 can ping a machine on VLAN 2.

I feel as though it should be simple, but can't get my head around it

Ah thanks. A router, that makes more sense.

Is it possible to have a router and a firewall between the two imaginary networks?
