making a backup, after build

hi everybody,

before i start installing vista business (totally free for student :0 ), i would like to know if i can make a backup of the hard drive after i have installed all the drives and stuff like, i dont want to have to insert all the cds to get the drivers.

If you still don't know what i mean, do you remember tiny computers used to ship a restore cd, i think it norton ghost or something??? and free program would be really good, i dont want to pay any more money.

just wondering, once i make a backup and say i stored it on hdd e: and say the system crashes, how would i go about restoring it? is it stored as an image of the hdd?
