making a bootable windows orlinux usb stick within OS X

this possible at all ?

am trying to make a bootable usb stick to use on my netbook and dont have a clue how to do it.

really dont want to have to install windows just to do this task so hopefully theres a way to do it

I'm pretty sure you can create a bootable USB stick with a Live CD. Just download and burn a live cd, boot into it, create bootable usb stick - no need to actually install anything.

Not sure which distro I saw it with though, try openSUSE.

the netbook doesnt have a cd drive to use a live cd though. and im not sure live cds work on macs , or do they ?

Well i think the ubuntu ones will as iirc there on boot up there options to select what drivers etc to use and I'm sure one says macbook (or similar)
