Hey all,

So I have rented a server form Thrust:VPS which is pretty good considering that I only pay £20 but its not powerful enough for my liking.

Since at home I have a static IP and will get upgraded to a 10mb upload speed in around 2 months so I'm planning to locally host my server.

I have a ~£600 budget to get a new server and need advice on what to get as I am new to server hardware.

The server will be running Ubuntu Server OS, Apachii, Teamspeak, Minecraft, and a small MySQL DB.

So far I understand Xeon processors seem to be the way to go. I'd like to have a duel CPU mobo but I cant find any for under £400. I'f Duel CPU is out of the question should I bother with Xeon processors? I'd also like to stick with Mini-ITX.

Any one have any experience? Are my dreams impossible with my budget?

I presume by enterprise or home build you mean if I want a standard case or a Rack stack able case?

Home build would be fine.

Instead of just one server, you could get 2-3 HP micro servers and spread the load between them. Perhaps you could setup some sort of clustering or VMWare vMotion to provide resilience in case one fails. I don't have one of these but from all reports they are quite good and quiet, possibly 3 of them would be less noisy than Xeon server?

I would consider perhaps two HP micro servers configured as VMWare hosts and the third as NAS (NAS4Free) to provide the centralized storage to support vMotion (NFS storage).

You may even have enough change to buy a UPS too:)

Im not sure if those would be powerful enough for a Minecraft server, but they do look nice. Im not an expert on AMD though. Would 2 of those really be better than some 3.5hx Xeon with 16gb ram? Im not really sure whats the deal with ECC ram is and if its really necessary.
