Hey,

Im going to make a new comp, going to get it for my bday hopefully.

Specs will be..

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
Maxator 160GB HD
1 GB Crucial Ram
CD-RW
DVD-RW
Antex superlanboy case
Antec PSU True Blue 480w
XFX 6200 256MB AGP
Acer 20" Widescreen Monitor

£700

Anyway, ive read the new guide about making one.

Just a few things, after making the whole thing and turning it on, what steps should I do then as ive never made a comp before so not sure what has to be installed and when etc etc.

Also, is the spec above ok?

Thanks,

Any other advice on building one would be ***.

Ta,

Dave

That gprahics card is VERY slow and it is AGP! Not PCI-E. I'd change the spec to this:

AMD Opteron UP 144 San Diego 1.8GHz 1MB Cache (Socket 939) - Retail (CP-141-AM) £114.95

Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-101-AS) £69.95

GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5 (GE1GB3200BHDC) (MY-005-GL) £49.95

OcUK GeForce 6800 GS 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-034-OK) £114.95

Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 160GB 1600JS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-047-WD) £47.95

NEC ND4551 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer LabelFlash ReWriter (Silver) - OEM (CD-028-NE) £27.95

FSP Sparkle AX500-A Blue Storm 500W ATX2.0 PSU (CA-005-SK) £49.95

I planned on upgrading the gfx card after, hence why I got a naff one but I may get a fairly better one.

Well, yes you did spec a pretty naff card (ATi for the win  )but you also specced a card which wouldn't fit- that motherboard supports PCI-E only and not AGP :)

The best bang per buck card at the moment is .. if you do want a better card ...
Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-044-CO) £229.07*Including VAT
This Week Only Price !

However , if he want to use agp still get the Asrock 939 dual ... space for pci-e and agp

Yes, but if he's buying a complete new system- i.e. new motherboard AND new graphics card, then what on earth is the point of opting for AGP?

This spec will work just fine. It's 100% compatable unlike your spec and balanced. I assume the £700 was before VAT which comes out at 822. So gone slightly higher but it's worth it. The case appears to be the best value for money at the moment with a reputable PSU. Opty is good value at the moment, decent graphics. Overall a nice spec.

didnt see a budget, saw £700 but i thought you were just saying how much that spec is. but if its too much il do you another one ;)

this features a dual core cpu for future proofing and adds greater performance at multi tasking. X1800XT is ultra good value atm so is worth buying.. and its just a nice spec :)

you could go a bit cheaper on the graphics front if you want to save money, but the X1800 is such good value atm, it would be silly not to take advantage of that fact.

My budget is really £700 MAX, sounds stupid but it is. Graphics aint my priority. I can live with a s*** gfx card and get a better one when I have more money. I dont play that many games atm so y'know.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 90nm £95.95
Crucial 1GB DDR PC3200 CAS3 £51.95
Gigabyte K8NF-9 nForce4 £57.95
Sapphire ATI Radeon X550 £34.95
Samsung SpinPoint P HD160JJ 160GB SATA-II 8MB £48.95
Sparkle AX500-A Blue Storm 500W ATX2.0 PSU £49.95
Acer AL2016Ws 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor £244.95

Subtotal £584.65
VAT £102.32
Total £686.97

+ £50-60 for the superlanboy

Just a thought but wouldnt something with ok on board graphics be better for now if you plan on getting a decent graphics card later? Would mean less sacrifice on the rest of the spec. Could be the difference between having the 3200 and the 3700 or opty 144.

For non-gaming, this will be fine:

£46.94
HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X300SE 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (RX300SE) (GX-021-HT)
£35.19
Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 NCQ 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (0A31637) (HD-001-HI)
£56.34
NEC ND4551 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer LabelFlash ReWriter (Black) - OEM (CD-026-NE)
£32.84
Antec SLK3800BUK Black Quiet Midi Tower Case - 400W SmartPower PSU (CA-048-AN)
£64.57
Acer AL2016Ws 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black/Silver (MO-015-AC)
£287.32

Total inc VAT: £708.73

Stuck to the spec that you requested in the first post. Can't find the lanboy case. As you said, graphics is not your priority and you don't game so I spec'd a very low end card.

Hey all,

The specs so far are ***. I may be able to up the budget now though as after a long chat with the parents I wont be getting it for my bday however there going to give £200 towards it, i already have £100 in saving and mabye anothe r£100 in a account somewhere and I get £60 a month so I should be able to strech to £800ish now.

So would you now be interested in gaming, or would you rather have a better CPU and more RAM? If you're not interested in gaming, then we have to reflect that in the spec.
