Making a printer wireless?

I was told recently that there is a dongle-type device that you can plug into a printer's USB port. The printer then becomes standalone and will adapt itself to receive printer requests over a wireless network. Is this true? If so, what is the device called? I've looked around the OcUK site and saw that the "print servers" under the networking section looked pretty close to what I'm looking for.

At the moment, I'm sending my printer jobs to an upstairs computer via wireless. Obviously, the printer has been set up as a share. It works pretty well. Just wanted to know if it can be done without having the 2nd computer turned on.

Many thanks!

We have an external hard-drive, connected via ethernet to our wireless router, with a USB port... the printer connects to the hard-drive and is available to print via wireless connection.
