Can anyone help me suss out what the best way is to image an hard drive with vista installed. Its my partners laptop with vista home premium. I want to image so I can back it up onto a few dvdr's and then wipe the partition so we can install xp pro. If for any reason we need to put vista back on all I need to do is crack open the image and put it back on.

Ive looked at a few programs but im unsure which is best because the the laptop has a sata hard drive not ide.

any help would be appreciated :)

that one will cope with sata yes?

Certainly does...

Just in passing, if the (SATA) HDD on the laptop is either a Seagate or Maxtor, you can use either DiscWizard or MaxBlast which are both the same and is basically Actonis True Image Home 11 with a couple of minor features removed...

There was a thread around here recently with a free full version download to Acronis TI ( a legal one ). I got my one from there although it took everyone a little effort as the links were a bit strange as were the activation and serial/registration emails.

Not sure if something like that still exists?. Worth having a dig around for.

I used it to take an image of my C: drive where my Vista install resides and I have used it once to restore it after a particularly nasty virus. Worked a treat.
