I've been wanting to make one of these for ages but not quite sure of the best way to go about it.

I don't know anything about making websites/getting webspace/domain names so where a good place to start?

Is it best to buy some webspace and domain and try and make it myself with simpleviewer, or should i goto one of the paid portfolio maker type sites???

I do like the idea of having my own webspace! I think it'll be tricker in the short term but more worthwhile once i get going. My first attempt is going to look soooo bad!

So any particular companies worth look out for/avoiding???

Just playing around with Gallery 2 at the moment as that had loads of great reviews for newbies. Up and running (kind of) but how exactly do you change themes/add new ones?

I want to set it up a little bit before i give out the address!! :p

DreamHost $6.25 a month, you get 180GB storage, 1.8TB bandwith, domain name, email address and other stuff i've no idea what it means. Looked good though. Still have very little idea what i'm doing but its lots of fun :)

Bah, still stuck on the stupid ocuk like theme! See enough of that on here :) Anyway, suppose it'll get better a lot quicker with you guys to c&c!!!

Please be gentle:

EDIT

Link removed, I killed the site!

Just had a quick look, some really nice pictures, love the China ones. Like the look and links on the site easy on the eye and the navigation is simple, big thumbs up :)

Thank you very much!

Not too shabby. I don't like the folder icons though, and the colour schemes not to my liking (too much OcUK me thinks). Is it easy to upload and control dude?.

I had it stuck on the ocuk style theme and couldnt for the life of me find how to change it! Was driving me mad... sorted now though.

It's a big of a nightmare to use at first. But thats cos i have no knowledge of html etc. But once you get used to the gallery software you find you can get away with not knowing much. There are loads of guides and templates about so you can get a basic one and tune it to your liking!

Hmm.. its working now, that was odd

Anyway, I've finished the template for the site, still a few bugs left, and yes im aware that it looks terrible in 1024x768 resolution and also looks bad on IE. I will fix it :p

But for those with 1280x1024 and firefox heres how far i've got so far:

Even though i planned this to be only the template, im kind of liking the simplistic look.

Wow! That really is shaping up to be a quality website! I take it all those fancy things that happen on mouse over are a bit tricky to do?

EDIT
So focused on website rubbish that I forgot to mention how great the photos were! I especially like the Ferrero Rocher idea, i'll probably steal that one! Well any excuse to buy some chocolate!

No probs, oh and btw, can you stop taking photos of spiders! :(

Shouldnt be too difficult, I hate the things too! You should have seen me being a big girl whilst I was taking them. I had to get practically inside the bush to take one picture, but once I get close i couldn't find where the spider was (I was using 100mm macro + tubes so could only see very small area), I peered over the top of my camera to see the absolutely massive spider running towards my face!!! I screamed like a little girl. :(

haha, did you run around the garden waving your arms about and shouting "ITS ON ME ITS ON ME"

I would have done the same :D

Nah I want for the ultra sonic scream approach, followed by jumping around. :D

Agreed, there are some excellent photos on the site, i particularly like the Torbay set. Also i noticed some of your photos are in two different sections, was this intentional? (Animal/macro)

Cheers! It was intentional, haven't decided whether i'll keep it that way or not though...

I can imagine that, I wish I could have seen it! I actually just laughed quite loud to an empty house!

Your site is looking really good, and enhanced by some amazing photos. You should be proud!

Nice of you to say! Havent seen you around here for a while now, thought Sarah might have banned you! Are you in torbay before March 10th? Moving to Canada after that so wont be around for a while!
