But they would then have to pay £110,239 back, so would not be a penny richer, other than some interest. There's a far greater chance they would just be £x amount out of pocket for x weeks, and an equal chance that they would be £110,239 out of pocket before winning anything.

It's not an attractive risk, at all.

It's a lottery. Your original premise was that it was a guaranteed win if you just waited long enough, which it isn't (the odds are too long; you might literally die before ever winning).

If it's just a case of paying in on the off chance you might win, it's a lottery same as any other. (Except with the requirement that you have to pay forever, which is a really attractive incentive to play, right?)

Do you not see this?

Sure, assuming (1) that the entry pool is fixed at week 1, and no new players can enter the game; and (2) that the entry pool is small enough such that you will win in a reasonable amount of time, ie. before you die and while you can still enjoy the winnings.

In the real world, while (1) is quite possible, achieving (2) generally requires reducing the prize fund to such a small amount that it's not really worth doing.

Actually, this idea of an OCUK lotto where everyone who wants to puts £1 per week in to play is pretty damn awesome... it just would require an epic amount of trust in whoever was doing the organizing!

Pyramid schemes (which this one is) don't work. Let me explain why

There is a list of names on an email. Yours it at the bottom. You send it to 10 people asking them to put their name at the bottom and move yours up one. The name at the top of the email receives £1 from that person.

Then the sending parts goes like this

That person sends the email to 10 people

10 people send to 10 people = 100 people

100 people send to 10 people = 1,000 people

1,000 people send to 10 people = 10,000 people

10,000 people send to 10 people = 100,000 people

by the time your name gets to the top of the list it will be in 100,000 peoples mailbox. Therefore when everyone sends you £1 you will get £100,000

You know why it doesn't work? Think about it.......

When the original mail gets send to 10 people, THEY ALL DELETE IT AS SPAM!!!!!!!!!!

however.........embedding javascript code in your popular website to deploy an smtp bot to fire out mass emails can work ;-) just saying

Just had idea and yes a crazy Idea..., If everyone on this forum makes a deal with each other where we all just donate and give £1 Pound to 1 person on the forum on a weekly basis. So at the end of everyone week who's ever turn it is will get £110,239 as that's how many member's are on this board (Yes I know they're not all active users) but just an example

It would mean people would get rich quickly and the list of users would always be random so you cant choose and pick when your time might come it might be this coming Friday or a Friday in years to come..


Also it doesn't have to be just £1 on a weekly basis, the more everyone agrees will depend on how much you get but it would have to be the same amount for everyone.

Thinking about it this is almost the exact same as playing the Lotto on a weekly basis but instead aimed a a smaller fixed crowd which increase your chances.

Since its weekly there would only be 52 winners a year and if we have 110,239 users on this forum it might take some people 4.7 years to win a prize. However waiting just 4.7 years for £110,239 is surely good?


Or I just got my maths wrong and someone might have to wait 2119 years to win something... :/

.. Plus if everyone puts £1.00 a week = £4.00 a month = £48.00 a year.... then someone might die before they win.
