Making music

Back in the day I dabbled with this a bit making music. Made some ok tunes but nothing that great.

Now I'm finding I have many many hours spare I'm looking for a new hobby.

What programs are good for making good sounding music? I have a great sound card which has specific modes and set ups for music creation but just need some guidance. Also any beginner guides to read so I can get started?

Fruity Loops is pretty good, I like to play about with it and it's not excessively priced.

There's loads of others as well though but I don't know enough about them.
