Hi everyone!

First things first I should explain that I am not currently doing a 'build', so to speak, I am in the process of setting up a nice home network that will serve just about every room in the house with access to a media server and gaming rig.

I am looking for advice on putting together a set of components to squeeze into a 3U/4U case and be able to stay cool. I have built systems at work to go into a rack, but never had to worry about them overheating, as they are usually in a temperature controlled environment.

Is water cooling a bit overkill? What luck have people had with conventional coolers in the these conditions?

Thanks! :)

I like the idea of this project as I myself am performing a similar task on our network at the moment (Upgrading and such) so I could steal some of your ideas :D

Still though I think it's a good decision to make sure your home network is up to date and working well with the IoT devices coming soon. As for the server I wouldn't bother with watercooling as the reason most other people haven't is that servers are supposed to be reliable and a watercooling loop introduces more elements of failure (e.g. leaking) than what a normal fan and heatsink have. Most server scenarios should be fine with a basic heatsink so an aftermarket heatsink with a larger surface area would have no issues at all with cooling the system :)
