Making my house more secure....

Hi :)

I've decided I'd like to find out if I can get better locks on my doors.

I have the standard double glazed white doors all round, the ones where you have to pull the handle up to lock them.

Now these are fine, but they are VERY easy to break into, despite the fact that it locks all around the door when you lock it.

To break in with force I'd imagine would be very difficult, but picking the locks is surprisingly easy. (takes me 1-2 minutes with 2 hair clips and a flat headed screw driver)

Also you don't even have to pick them cause they are easily bumpable. Any key that fits in the lock can bump them. I tried the key from my mums house and it bumped on the 2nd attempt.

Are there unbumpable locks? I've never found any, but I'm sure they must have got round this issue by now.

Cheers,

G

If only they would make honey for you to munch on and sell as well.

I say go for massive HSS steel bars over all your windows and a spoks style security system like in series one. But make sure to get a control box that is child and chocolate proof !

When we moved into this house, we had all of the locks changed, and we had one of those "can't lock yourself out locks" that you have to leave the house with a key to lock the door afterwards.

It is stronger than a standard Yale or Deadlock, and you can even have locks made so you have one key for all of your doors.

Look up "Garrison Keys and Locks", and also see if there is an APT Howfield shop in your area.

I read somewhere that the average person now gets burgled every 70 years. When you take in to account really dodgy areas where people get burgled every second day then the chances of actually getting burgled in nice areas are very small.

The days of the professional burglar are long gone - most burglars are now druggies needing to finance their next high or burglary for the purpose of car theft (in which case this only usually occurs if they can see your car keys through the letter box). Neither of these two will do anything but smash their way in. A box outside with a massive alarm and a friendly neighbour are your best forms of household protection nowadays.

A criminal will always pick the weakest point of your house to get in anyway, so if your doors are the weakest point change them.

Stand outside your house and try to put your mind to the same wavelength as a criminal and imagine you wanted to break in to the house. Try and find the weak points on your house.

you can do what you like to window locks but if they want in they will just take one of those little can based blowtorch things to the lock ares

Hit with something heavy at corner = broken double glazing.

If scagheads want to rob you, they aren't going to know how to bump locks are they, they'll smash a window, go in and steal cash most of the time and small high value items.
