Making the default Music folder a location on external HDD

Is there a way to get the Music folder pointing to another location?

I've got a folder on an external HDD where I keep all my music in, and what i've done is drag the folder onto the sidebar as a shortcut.

Now when I disconnect the HDD the folder dissapears and when I reconnect it it's still not there. I thought if I made this the default Music folder then it will stop dissapearing?

I've messed around with Alias's but it's still not playing ball.

Create a symlink to the folder on the external drive from your home Music folder.

Are you using Vista? If so just right click on the Music icon in your user folder, properties, then location tab

As pointed out, the symbolic link trick is what you need to do in OS X
