Hi there. I've been asked by my dad to make a website for his company i have only had a little play with html using notepad i think was a long time ago so cant really remember!? but found it not the easiest thing in the world.

Ive been prompted by someone though to use dreamweaver as it is cheap and easy to use. But what other software out there is even better than this and as cheap or cheaper? or is this the only one to really go for? Thanks for your help :)

If your new to web design then you can't really go far wrong with Dreamweaver, as you can use it in design view rather than code view, or split view (design and code) so you can learn a little coding while designing.

Erm, dreamweaver isn't cheap. It's about £250.

If you want to create a dynamic site that your dad can easily edit you might want to use a content management system. This site lists loads of free ones.

Dreamweaver and cheap don't go together....or do they, what sort of price is this software going for then as I need to get some really and KompoZer and NVU lack a lot of features I need.

Stu

well he doesnt mind paying for software i found dreamweaver for nearly 400! where is it for 250 he would be even more happy seeing it for that! But i would be doin all of it the editing and maintenance of the site as he's not exactly a computer man..

It's been a long time since I looked at pricing for dreamweaver, it's probably changed. Even if did now where to get it for £250 I couldn't tell you.

a lot of web designers use dreamweaver. It takes a lot of work out of the build. That's fine until you want to do some clever stuff and then it ain't good enough.

Eclipse.

For design tweaks, I'll use FireBug for FireFox to toy and tweak, then make the changes permanent directly into the pages (CSS or markup)

if you've already started using notepad then just get an advanced text editor - don't get a horrible app like Dreamweaver - in windows I use e-text editor, as I use textmate on mac.

to echo Dj_Jestar - Firefox and Firebog are invaluable for CSS and Javascript testing

It's $399 from Adobe USA and £399 from Adobe UK, makes sense doesn't it. Got a mate in the USA?!

You can get good educational deals from Adobe if you have a .ac.uk email address.

I used to work designing websites, used Dreamweaver all the time, like the program and would recommend it.

aswell as a website for your dad is this also a project for you to learn website building skills? or is this just like your dad wanting a website and as you learnt a tiny bit as say school he thought your now a genious at it.

hehe, you probs aint far off tbh :)

Cheap and programs like Dreamweaver DO NOT go together :)

Even if you still bought Dreamweaver you will still need to learn what makes a good website. This is incredibly important if it is to promote a business.

I have been in full employment for a few years now working for my father and i discussed with him about having a website and so i proposed the idea of me trying to make it myself, as to get a website built as u may well know can be very expensive. And no i didnt learn a thing at school in I.T. as the teachers were useless. . .

so whats your recommendation?:)

...to get a proper web developer to make his website ;)

An amature website will reflect badly on his business. I don't think you should be making his website if all you've done is play on HTML a while ago but can't remember much, you should be practising with hobby sites first.

well if thats the case i have no prolbem in making the site the site for the dad 100% free, only cost would be hosting and domain name though if thats a problem both can be got for free. I odn't really like to discourage people learning new skills espcially if this is a career move from you but if this is just a 1 off, never going back to it sort of thing i'm here to help, plus i've been doing so much javascript latelly would be nice to get back to html for a bit plus i can use all my fancy new skills on something.

Let me know what you think Leon88. email should be in trust and if not it's addy_020@ hotmail.com
