Hi,

How does one go about making their site number #1 in google without paying for it?

I have read up on search engine optimization a year ago and have forgotten a lot of it..

Previously I understood one is to use:

a) different meta tags for different pages of the site
b) link to other companies

is this still the case? in fact my previous websites did shoot up in ranking when i followed the above two methods...

However I now realise there are such things as:-

a) robots
b) googlebot
c)verify-v1
d) google-analytics

Please can someone kindly advise me if the above points A - D would held my site hit number 1 in google?

All help and assistance would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance..

The more inbound links the higher you will be on google. Also make sure that your content has references to what your search phrase is as they scan the text too.

Many SEO experts believe meta tags and the page titles aren't taken in to much consideration with search engine bots anymore. However it's good practise to have "Page - Site Name" instead of "Site Name - Page" for the page title.

It's also advisable to use header tags. E.g. <h1> for what the page is about, <h2> for a subject in one of those pages, etc.

It's important not to spam content or words your trying to push in the meta tags/title as the search engine will discipline you for it.

Ouu no, titles are still important but yes meta keywords are apparently a complete waste of time. I keep them customisable on my cms setups though, gets people to focus the content they're writing based upon the keywords in there.

Make sure you use the meta description though.

SEO is changing soon though form using meta tags and inbound links as to where you can be placed.

Search engines like google are going to change and use "respectable" website links to help rank your site

ie If your website is linked to a .gov website it would be ranked higher than if it was linked to a .com/co.uk. The same rule will apply for other sites such as .org etc

Not sure when they are implementing this though but I know it is occuring :)

Also make sure that all your links on your page are full links
ie http://www.tom.com/bob.html not just bob.html

If you were using an ecommerce shop then putting the item name in the URL would also help push their page rank up incase people search for a specific product

a) They search your pages, indexing the content.
b) That's Google's robot or spider.
c) That's just a meta tag that Google asks you to put on your homepage as a security measure to verify that you actually own the site before you can use their sitemap system.
d) A way of finding out more about the people who visit your site.

Theyre putting a lot more emphasis on that rather than meta tags and inbound links from company websites rather than respected website, its to try and stop websites that just use the domain name to rank high but their actual content has nothing to do with the domain name.

ie domain names that dont have a proper webpage but just useless "search" box which just turns up a lot of spam, or porn websites poppin around everywhere

To get yourself into a good placing on Google there are really only two methods.

1. Create a good website.
If you've got a good site, you aren't attempting to trick search engines with rubbish and you've got some incoming links then you'll get into the engine.

2. You pay

That really is about it.

inbound links mean other sites linking to your site :)

and if you have more than one website of your own, hosted on the same box, tehre is no point putting inbound/outbound links between those sites as google will pick up they are all on the same hosting and ignore them :)

so far ppl have suggested what not to do and what to avoid...

ok 2 of u have kindly stated "build a good website", but even if you code it well using css and divs that doesnt mean you will hit number 1???

however there are companies formed that help businesses hit number 1 in google without paying....there must be a more definite way?

just a year ago it was meta tags / description and key words ....either its the same or not??

pls refrain from advising what to avoid

thanks
