malicous software tool silly Q but how does it work

ok so every so often I get the update for "windows malicous software tool"
i update and install but never know whether its something i need to run my self or it does it auto.

so how does it work? do I do it or its auto?
is it any good or dont bother with it?

I was wondering the same thing last night when I saw an update and didn't know how it worked, cheers.

I too have wondered that in past, but often get distracted by bess and forget about it.
