Hi

Has anyone on here been to Malta. I would like to go soon and was just wondering if any on here has been and can recommend any hotels and places to visit.
Possibly going for 1 week and a hotel with just bed and breakfast.

Thanks

been a bunch of times, really lovely place, last time I was there I stayed at the Hilton, fantastic hotel.
That's like the most vague response ever :p

I've only been once but really liked it. We went in July though which was a bit of a mistake as the 30c+ heat made it quite hard to get out and see the sights during the day (Valetta etc.). We stayed in Sliema which seemed to be a good base. St Julians is where all the night life is, Valetta is where the history is.

Definitely do a boat tour to Gozo and the Blue Lagoon, they're really good value when you do one with lunch etc. included. I think ours was called Captain Morgan Cruises. The buses are fun, but not so much in 30c heat. Part of the experience though.

Remember the beaches aren't actually beaches, they're rocks. Always amusing seeing the italians trying to look cool whilst tip-toeing across hot/sharp rocks. Oh and the foods good too.

I do remember the weather being incredibly hot, and I have been to some of the world's hottest places, one day it tried to rain and you could see the rain coming down from the sky, however it had evaporated before it got anywhere near the ground, very humid place.

Some beautiful beaches including Ghajn Tuffieha, Paradise Bay and Blue Lagoon. Got to admit though, parts of it were strange (e.g. north of the main island by Mellieha). Although I haven't been to the overly Brit parts of Spain, it reminded me of that. Confused bars and restaurants that weren't sure if they were Irish, English, Italian or Maltese. A great example of the area I stayed in; the local supermarket - the 4 papers on sale were The Daily Express, Mail, Star and Sun I believe.

However large parts of the countryside and rural areas are beautiful and you get more of a feel of actual Malta. Valletta is well worth visiting as well :)

We've always stayed at the Malta Hilton and that includes the old one. Very good hotel and a good base (St Julian's) for exploring. Get a bus from there into Valetta for sightseeing.

Plenty to keep you occupied in Valetta and do the Grand Harbour Tour.

The bus station from Valetta will get you everywhere but car hire is more fun. I've driven to every part of the island, yes lying by the pool can get very boring.

You have to visit Mdina, Gozo (and Comino) and some of the Megalithic Temples.

Spend the mornings exploring and head back to the hotel to relax in the afternoon. One week will keep you quite occupied.

Thanks everyone:)

I want to visit to see the history of the island more than anything so it seems St Julians and Sliema would be good bases for visiting Valetta

Also renting a car sounds good fun but what side of the road do they drive on:D

I knew an Italian bloke that went to Malta once, he didn't seem to enjoy it, I think it was his accent :)

Here is a video of his experience. Caution this is NSFW as it contains foul language

I went years ago and it is a lovely place, the locals are genuinely nice people but they still didn't like the Germans. They drive in the shade, whichever side of the road that is. And you give way to anything bigger than you.

Can't make specific recommendations but sounds like you'd benefit from a Lonely Planet/Rough Guide book.

I tend not to go anywhere without one, they open up so many great sights and restaurants one wouldn't find otherwise.

I went to malta and all i had to show for it was a falcon....................

Love Malta, the old buses were great (Not been for a few years but hear they have been replaced?), steeped in history and wonderful people.

We went this June for 4 nights and stayed in Sliema at the Rocca Nettuno suites, which were located just off the front and were fine for the money - pretty cheap.
Sliema itself was really nice and there are some nice walks along the sea front where the local youth sunbathe and there is a foot ferry that travels back and forth to Valletta for a couple of euro, which is deffo better than catching the bus. Also worth doing the harbour tour at some point which lasts an hour or so and was really nice just to relax and look at the boats and scenery.

Valletta was really nice and had some amazing scenery and could easly spend a couple of afternoons wandering around. It had a really interesting war museum too which it well with the money - about 8 euro iirc.

Err.. you must catch the bus to St Juliens. Really pretty with an amazing marina for some very expensive looking yaughts. Nice food there too as well as a few more pubs, rather than just restaurants that serve booze you get in sliema.

Oh, and get the bus/ferry to gozo and go a hop on hop off tour. One stop was where some of season 1 game of thrones was filmed!

Anyway, Malta was really nice and I would expect most peeps would think the same :)
