Malwarebyte

I use MWB in parallel with my antivirus and it works well enough for me. I'm just following the example of those friends who know more about PCs that I do, so that's all I can really tell you, but with weekly scans on both I've not put a foot wrong since and managed to catch a couple of dodgy bits before anything bad happened.

I asked because after scanning with it, malware was picked up on my laptop, even when a antivirus was installed. So guessing antivirus is not great at defending against malware, only viruses.

Depends on the AV package. A lot of Malware is not technically a 'virus' and whatever gets picked up by the heuristic scans and all that is still just a 'potential' threat. You still ought to check exactly what the AV/MWB has identified and make your own mind up.
For example, a well-known virtual disk drive app would always crop up on MWB after first install, so I'd have to create an exception for that.

I always find malwarebytes good for picking up unwanted programs that may tag along when installing software. Like toolbars and homepage jackers. Quite handy to have along side AV.
