Hey all.
I am working on my man cave (will create a thread upon completion).
This thread could have gone in 'Home and Garden' but I feel it is more suited to the Console section.

For all my old consoles I have bought an Ikea Kallax, which does not hide the cables at all.

My idea is to cover some plywood in material and nail that to the back of the unit, then drill some holes for the cables to pass through. The mario curtains were full length and have been shortened, so I have enough of that material remaining to cover the plywood with.

Any other ideas I should consider first?

 
First things first is to take down those curtains, unless this is in your sons bedroom.

Then I would just carry out your original idea and put some backing on the unit with holes in.
 
Lovely unit!

As a fellow retro collector I would put a backing on the unit, install some LED lighting and get some nice Artwork specific to the platform to stick on the back of each cube.

Edit: Notice you are in Stoke. Where abouts?
