Hi guys,

I've tried so many times before to overclock my pc yet I cant get anywhere with it. When I bought the cpu it was at 2.60ghz...now its at 2.4!! Why? When I bought it I tried to overclock but when I increased it even slightly, the pc froze. So obviously I went back to the original 2.6 HOWEVER for some reason my pc decided to freeze again at 2.6?!?! So I kept going back until it eventually started working properly again at 2.4. Obviously I need some serious help and tips please.

Specs:
CPU -Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Mobo - 4CoreDual - VSTA
RAM - 2GB DDR2 Kingston
GPU - Nvidia Geforce GTX 260

Yea thats what I thought but it that the only reason why I cant overclock?? If so can someone possibly reccommend a mobo that is good enough for overclocking but also cheap.

Yup your mobo has very little overclocking on it, if any, some have overclocked with them, with volt mods and stuff, but not recommended if u don't know how.

3 mobo's below worth having a look at, the last one is the one id go for, but is the most money.

Just to point out, the Default speed of a Q6600 is 2.4, you say it was originally at 2.6, meaning it was slightly overclocked when you got it?

Low end asrock mobo's where never that good at clocking if at all, i check their site, and that mobo does have some overclocking features, but i can't see it going that high in all honesty.

If you are wanting to overclock the cpu, id deffinatly think of getting a new mobo.

Hello Jonny,

can you confirm what is the speed of your memory please? :) . . . I'm guessing it could be DDR2-800?

I think the most likey problem is that when you raise the FSB to overclock the CPU you are also increasing the ram speed which it may not like? . . . if you can download CPU-z and either tell me what it says in the [Memory] and [SPD] tab that would help!

If you are in fact using 400MHz DDR2 along with your Q6600 the motherboard will set the memory using the [3:2] memory divider like so . . .

  • Multi x9
  • FSB 266
  • CPU Frequency 2394MHz
  • Mem Multi [3:2]
  • Mem Frequency 399MHz (DDR2-798)
so if you then tried to clock the processor up to 2.6GHz without changing anything but FSB then this is what would happen

  • Multi x9
  • FSB 289
  • CPU Frequency 2601MHz
  • Mem Multi [3:2]
  • Mem Frequency 433.5MHz (DDR2-867)

I can confirm that the Asrock boards are not great at OC'ing, my own 4coredual gave better OC'ing with PC3500 in place of PC6400, from what I read they are pretty much more suited to 2 cores than four, and I don't think the volt mods work well with a 1066 quad?

I replaced mine with a B grade Gigabyte from OC, got the IO shield from eBay and been happy enough, will probably return to OC'ing that soon.
