Man of the Match

After watching a couple of games over the weekend it make me wonder how Man of the Matches are chosen. On some channels they seem to let the audience decide and others the commentator seems to decide.

From that though there must be multiple TV companies broadcasting a single game, and if they have different methods of choosing MOTM then this could also lead to different winners being chosen. Could there end up with a situation where there are a couple of people all in the same changing room with bottles of champagne. Or do the broadcasters chose on of them to award an “official” MOTM?

There is usually an official MOTM, then various others (like TV networks, papers etc) as far as I know.

It's usually the person who has the most media recognition and probably scored he most.

Very rarely is it the player who influenced the game the most.

ESPN do it by fans vote for quite a few matches, though I think that's only cup matches. The colour commentator usually does it on Sky on behalf of Barclays. And then who ever is the main match sponsor of that specific match will choose one and then they get to chat with the player, family has pictures with them and all that jazz.

There was a time a few years ago in the premiership when you could guarantee a few players to get it in each game. Xabi Alonso and Frank Lampard used to just be awarded it by default!

I like the MOTM for the home team that are normally given by the main sponsor.

It's normally an absolute joke as well, as if you've just been stuffed 3-0 they will still give it to one of the home team players. The announcer is normally a little subdued in this case, followed by plenty of giggling stadium wide.

for example in the premiership, who choose the official Barclay's premiership Man of the match with Barclay's Champagne, if its on sky then the sky co-commentators choose.

In some games they seem to get some crappy trophy now instead of champagne.

My local team used to give it to the same midfielder 90% of the time based on the fact that he ran around a lot and got stuck in, I think it was the VIP room who voted.
