I lived in Dubai for 2 years (1998 - 2000) and frequently ate something expats called a 'cheesy bread'. I believe it's a cheese manakish, made with akawi cheese.
A few Lebanese places nearby have manakish but none have akawi cheese, probably because it's so hard to get.
It looks something like this:
We used to fold it to eat, so it'd look like this:
I have eaten it in London, I believe it was at this place: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restau...433010-Reviews-Z_Z_Bakery-London_England.html and their Facebook cover photo (https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/t31.0-8/416631_508713059152236_1135444597_o.jpg) does show Traditional Manakish made with traditional Akawi cheese.
Has anyone been able to source any Akawi cheese in the UK? I couldn't find anywhere to buy it from alibaba where the minimum order was about £1k.
I would love to make or at least eat this somewhere outside of London, but haven't had any luck
