Hi Guys

I'm looking for a new card but I'm on a tight budget and was wondering whether mantle would take advantage of the extra ram on 4gb 270x cards when playing the likes of BF4 and Star Citizen?

4Gb would be wasted on a mid range card. Stick with the 2gb version.

Hey dude,

AFAIK Mantle wont make use of extra VRAM in any different way than DirectX does - more VRAM is primarily useful for cranking up to higher resolutions and graphics settings (particularly Anti Aliasing).

FYI I run 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution with ultra settings in BF4 and my GPU VRAM peaks at around 2100MB used (out of 4096MB available on my 290x). So I would steer clear of 2GB cards but 3 or 4GB will be plenty.

Ah! 2 different opinions there... But yeah Matt is prob right - what is the rest of your spec?

I would go for a 280X if your budget can stretch?

I kinda set myself a price £200 but cards are either £40 under or £40 over, I had thought about getting a standard 270 like the msi gaming for about £130 then getting a 2nd one later.

My spec is a bit old so don't laugh to hard.

Phenom 965be
Crosshair IV
g.skill 1600 16gb
Benq 20.5 1680x1050 monitor
Zotac gtx275 amp
Seasonic 750 mod psu

Your spec is decent enough dude, good PSU, decent mobo and PLENTY of ram. The 270/x would probably be the best match for your CPU - and when mantle is fully released for all the R9 cards this should in theory greatly reduce the bottleneck that your CPU might be causing - remember though mantle is not built into all games (only BF4 at the mo) and who knows how successful it will be in future games.

With mantle in mind option might be to sell 8GB of your ram (assuming you have 4x4GB sticks?) and use the £40 or so to put towards a 280x GPU?

So spending the extra £30 over my original £200 budget on the entry level MSI 280x at £230 over say the MSI 270x Hawk at £170 would be worth it economically and performance wise with my spec?

btw thanks for the advice and info ;)

I also have a Phenom CPU and recently decided to upgrade my card. Due to the speed of the processor I came to th conclusion that anything more than a 270X would bottleneck the CPU.

I ordered this - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-161-PC

Best pound for pound 270X around at the moment. Hitting near 7950 speeds and will confortably play BF4 on high settings with at least 60 FPS.

Sell the games and it becomes a real steal.

Mine is waiting for me at home so will put some benchmarks up later compared to my previous card, an MSI R6970 Lightning.

Yeah I thought this could be the case, which is why I advised the 270x would likely be the best match for your CPU. Mantle when released for the 270 and 280 could well alleviate the CPU bottleneck but of course this wont help in all other current and future non-mantle games.

Well until I read about Mantle, I was going to get an FX chip, as I have an AM3+ board (Sabertooth) already as I blew up my Crosshair IV.

A 270X is an amazing card for the price and with Mantle hopefully giving my Phenom a boost on BF4, I will be able to have much better gaming experience than I am having now, but on a massive budget.

Meh I would not limit myself to a 2GB, 3GB is really the minimum these days coming from a Skyrim mod user :D

Well yeah fair enough if you play a game like Skyrim or such then sure. I suppose if it does not cost much extra then why not. In the majority of things though i doubt a 270X will have the grunt required, even in crossfire, to use 4gb at playable fps.

I was looking at many different benchies and it didn't look that impressive to me rating much lower than the 7950. I'm hoping to purchase a 280x at some point, but waiting to find out how much my MOT will cost in April :(

Get one of these. Premium 270X, fantastic cooler, card will run very cool and overclock well.
