At the ripe old age of 58 my mum is currently learning to drive.
This is all down to unfortunate events in the family (the loss of my father).
She has decided that she really needs to learn how to drive as she is rather stranded without transport - busses are rare vehicles where she lives.
Anyway she is getting on fine, her practical lessons are booked and she is taking her theory test next Wednesday (if she fails it she will hopefully just about be able to get another one in before the test changes).

Because she is the older driver she has decided that she is just going to get herself the "Automatic License" and I agree with her.
She can get an automatic town car which will suit 98% of her driving needs.
We've been looking at the Honda Jazz and that is seeming the best bet at the moment.

Whilst looking at other brands/models I've noticed that Toyota for example don't seem to do an automatic version of their smaller cars.
Rather they have a multi-mode and i-Shift? option.

Can I assume that by the very nature of the fact that you can use it in a semi-manual way (gears without a clutch) that you would need a full license and not just an automatic to drive one of these?
The Aygo and Yaris were both options - but neither seem to offer a true "just automatic" rather one that can be true auto or switched.

Thanks for the information people.
I did wonder what the official definition would be.
So on an Automatic Only license there would be nothing stopping you driving a multi-mode vehicle so long as any gear change facility open to you did not require the use of a clutch.
That opens up a few more options - thanks again.
