No, not another go at Apple over their Map App, but a pointer to a really useful and more importantly free Map application which uses the Free Ordnance Survey Openspace data
It is called Outside Maps (if you do a search on Itunes store it looks like the shape you get on Trig Points, a circle with three arms running off it, with a black icon).
The App allows you to use the freely available OS Data (that they had to release to the public a few years ago). This is the data OS use to create all their maps - the detail level of the most zoomed in level is down to individual buildings!
Also includes an OS Overlay with the info for each grid, an OS Map from 1921-1947, OpenStreetMap data, OpenCycleMap Data and a few other data sets. Best of all, you can download on demand or if you wish you can bulk download for offline viewing. Includes GPS (or wifi) positioning and Compass/Bearing as well.
