Mario 25th Wii Button Lag

Hi everybody. I recently purchased Mario 25th edition for the wii, but when i play it, it has very slight button lag which causes deaths. Does anybody else have this? It's not as precise as it could be. I don't know if it's normal or not, certainly ruins the fun!

Sounds simple, but what condition are the batteries in on the wii remotes? When they run low they can be a bit sketchy.
