Hi all, i don't know if this is the right sub forum to ask in but since there would be software developers in here i'd thought i'd give it a go.

i'm currently trying to find the market rate for a Java web developer but all the searches i've done (bar itjobswatch) are recruitment sites.

so my question is, what do you think is the current market rate for a java web developer, or even just a standard developer of any programming language.

thanks

Hi Smit,

sorry i didnt provide enough details to get a proper answer.
Yes its UK im looking for
Yes its London
and i guess for experience say 2-5 years (if thats too broad say 2 years)

thanks

Have a look on some job sites mate. They are usually your best indicator of what people are paying for different areas and different levels of experience.

Hi fez.

i did look at some job sites but im most certain that a lot of the jobs there arent actually real. i say this because i think most recruiters are on there posting fake positions (that pay more than the usual amount) that require skills that they are missing on their own databases. so when people apply, the recruiter will call them up for details and place it on their database.

this database is then used to search for possible applicants when they have a position available.

@dokko, im pretty sure those games could be had for free :)

With 2-5 year experience for a Java developer, in London, I'd say around the £30k mark starting salary. However it is not as easily done as that.. age, other skills (Design? Scrum? B/TDD? etc) would play a massive part. :)

i was thinking more around the 35K mark but 30's close enough.

@fez, ill send some email around some companies and see if i can get some answers but like you said they prob wont divulge.

i've got some time today, so i might just grab about 50 jobs from those jobs sites and filter out all of the lower paid ones and get an average of that.

ok, well ive done a quick calculation, and it came to 38k

these are the lower band salaries and were very specific to java web technologies and jobs that are in london.

that might be abit higher than what most people would think is average... but thats why i initially asked the question....

Yeah but ive got to make them for my latest assignment and Java is a bitch, not as much as a bitch as flash...think ive taken the wrong course.

stick with it and you might end up liking it :) but every bodies different and you might find out that programmings not your thing at all.

@dangerstate, yea i agree that seems abit high whether or not your considering the current market conditions. but that isnt going to stop me from trying to get a pay rise :p

@numnutz, 28-30k outside london? man thats what im on now IN LONDON. my current deal sucks :(
