Applied for a part time Customer Assistant job at Marks and Spencer and have been invited in today for an assessment. Anybody work there and can give me an idea of what im in for?

Any help would be greatly apreciated :)

Be prepared for roleplay. :D

No seriously, my sister just started there and her interview involved how she would help a customer (interviewer pretending to be a customer), e.g. party food tips with only 10 mins shopping time.

Worked there last christmas, just be natural and in the role play bit think about what you'd like to hear as a customer. It's mostly common sense to be honest :)

Well had the interview which was a role play like you said. I did really well and the woman interviewing me said i had one of the best scores she had had. Was taken into another room to pick a job off a notice board which seemed wierd and unfortunately there were no positions that fitted in with my college hours

On most of the jobs the hours were like 9 - 4 weekends, evenings starting at 4 or 5 apart from like a thursday which had me starting at 1.30 in the afternoon which is when im at college.

Anyway i was told my file would be kept on record and they would ring me if anything came up. Not holding out much hope though.

I work at marks and spencer lol unlucky on the interview!! i was lucky with my hours i guess. Remember you can always phone every few weeks or so and see if they have any new vacancies.

lol marks and spencers are not even worth working for guys - if you fail an interview (which is insanely hard for a tillmonkey job!) consider it a lucky escape. it's a horrid company with jilted management and a history of poor employee treatment - especially younger ones. you are constantly looked on as if you are a criminal despite holding up their "reputation". most of the staff, including management, are two faced and will - without so much as a breath - backstab you.

before i quit my job there, i felt so depressed. it was THAT bad.

i will never forget the changeover from Iceland to M&S (our Iceland store was bought up). We were a high performing store in terms of customer service, yet we were talked to like children by the M&S training lady. Every few minutes we'd have a talk on how we needed to be "the best of the best of the best" (and i quote). we even had black marks and crap like that.

At least the people in the store we trained up in were nice.

You have to remember that the managers are being pooped upon from above and thus take it out on their staff.

The company hires loads at xmas, then lays all the temps off and leaves the place understaffed for the rest of the year and stretched beyond capability.

The best job if you work there is in store operations, gives the most scope for hiding/easy jobs and you dont have to face customers. I got in with a good team when i switched stores and had a pretty easy 9 months.

Finished uni and now i get paid more for doing a lot less than i had to at M&S. :D

Can agree with you there, the managment is a bit :/ but if i get paid 6.30 an hour whilst in full time education then whooooooo cares!! and if anything it makes me not want a job like this in the future!
