Mars: War Logs

apparently its a nice little game but don't expect the graphics and animations of a triple A title.
Apparently the combat is good

Played an hour of this. It isn't the worst game ever made.

It looks like it is from 2007,and the controls are a bit clunky, but it isn't bad at all so far. The dialogue leaves a lot to be desired though!... I imagine it might get quite comical(in a bad way). It seems very unpolished.

It seems kind of like 'this is what we have so far, give us a budget and the sequel will be incredible'

The combat is very functional as well.... Lock on, block, counter, roll, stagger, backstabbing etc.

Any more views on this? I don't mind clunky, but if the dialogue or story is rubbish it would put me right off :(

The story(so far) isn't rubbish. The dialogue just isn't that great...tbh, it seems a little to me like it might be a problem in translation, you know the way dialogue in the first Witcher game kind of seemed off sometimes.

I am enjoying it. It is certainly a 'poor mans Mass Effect', that is the perfect way of describing it, but there is depth to it, and the combat really is quite good. The only thing that is really unforgivable for me so fa is the camera...some really dodgy angles have caused me to die a few times.
I will get some screenshots off soon, though it really isn't a good looking game to be fair, about on par with something like Mass Effect 2 imo, with some really low-res textures.

After finishing off Dark Souls today, I am gonna get in to this.

Cheers Pig, sounds like it might just need a patch or two to make it worth a budget purchase. I'm a sucker for anything set on Mars :)

Here are a few reivews(funnily enough, some of them mention translation problems!)

I think Mars: War Logs is a good case study for RPG design and should be explored if you’ve got 10 hours to spare and can appreciate both indie and classic role playing games. While I don’t believe the it should have had voice acting at all (perhaps placing the budget into things like translation and quest content would have been a better choice), Spiders have managed to produce a game with a lot of things that plenty of popular RPG titles are missing: charm, love, and a good focus on both combat and branching story. While it may be hard to get used to the iffy translations and voice acting, you’ve got an action RPG that has a great brawler/beat ‘em up foundation. What you have here is a game that was made with a lot of love and passion, but was cut quite a bit short of perfection due to budget restraints and the need to please fans.

It should be noted that this is not a game for kids. Think about the crass sense of humor in The Witcher series, then multiply it by 5. This is a title full of rape, sex, murder, and violent references. It all has a narrative reason, and it doesn’t necessarily lack nuance, but you might be taken by surprise at just how gritty this game is. If you were expecting something more Dragon Age oriented, think again. Beating up pimps, rapists, and with a bad attitude and foul mouth is Roy’s prerogative.

Despite the quirks and rough coat of paint, Mars: War Logs is still a worthy effort. Anyone who enjoys WRPGs like Mass Effect, The Witcher and Dragon Age will find something to take from here even if it’s all been done before. One thing that surprised me was the almost complete lack of bugs. Normally we find glitches and even game-breaking bugs in AAA titles, but War Logs is almost rock solid. At the end of the day this a downloadable title at value price, but one that offers a pretty robust, action RPG experience. The game follows conventions almost too much though, and in the future I’d love to see the team carve out an RPG that stands apart from the crowded market. In the meantime, welcome to Mars and enjoy your stay.

Mars War Logs is a fun and interesting take on Mars as a setting, and pays homage to the classics while adding a bit of its own flavor. While the game forgets itself at times, the non-linear and optional nature of the quests offer lot of reasons to replay the game at least once. Mars War Logs isn’t perfect but if you’re looking for a short and sweet Action RPG experience, go grab it now.

This is actually a little deeper than I originally thought. The crafting and stealth are not bad at all. Now that I have upgraded my weapons and armour, the combat is getting a little easier.

Some of the voice e acting is truly horrendous though!

The game badly needs to sort out camera controls as well, which at times are really awkward. Also, the fov is far roo narrow, and can't be changed in the ingame menu.

Getting a little bored of this now tbh... Some of the dialogue literally makes no sense!

He environments are far too similar to be interesting as well.

if you like games which are all cryptic and leave you feeling baffled at the dialogue you should try Pathologic :p

I ended up holding off on this, was lucky enough to read the RPS wot I think just before hitting the Buy button.

With a bit of luck this might end being another Precursors - brilliant russian made adventure/space sim thingie that needed a few fan made patches and translations to bring it up to scratch.
