Martial arts

I was videoing, so wasn't too bad that time. ;)

That said there's a few choice bruises after some of the sessions hehe. All part of the fun, you have to experience the pain to understand it. ;)

If you're not bruised, you're not training hard enough. :)

I used to come out of my higher-grade training sessions with rupture rash (those cool little red dots where capillaries in the skin get ruptured), bruises and sore joints.

My only bad injuries in many years of doing martial arts were from taking a swung chain to the head, punched in the mouth (inch-long muscle deep cut on my top lip) and a bad (from a training perspective) throw (complete acrioclavicular ligament tear).

Good times. :)

I'd suggest getting to all these classes and trying out each art for yourself.

Then see how you felt and what you liked and go for it!
I've got a TKD background but found Muai Thai a little more extravagant.

Wing Chun is an excellent Martial Art. Not only is it one of the more effective styles it will change your body while teaching you humility and giving you self-esteem. I would say it is fairly easy for a newbie to pick up as long as he or she is dedicated. Tbh most Martial Art are good within their own right but i have always focused on Bruce Lee the Kung Fu king.. Even when developing his own style Jeet Kune Do, he uses Wing Chun as the base model which you can add various other styles/techniques to. I suggest you research various Martial Arts see the differences and what appeals to you. Here's a Youtube channel with free lessons in Wing Chun, Tai Chi, JKD. Master Wong :D http://www.youtube.com/user/138mws

Wing Chun doesn't half give you bruised forearms though (all the blocks and slaps)

but I really enjoyed it (most of the time !) only Martial Art I've done that I always thought if worst came to worst (ie in self defence) the techniques would actually work

What is the difference between WTF and ITF tae Kwon do?

WTF is the 'olypmic' style. Full contact, but wearing body shields. No punches to the head. Very flashy, but not all that useful. Very sport biased.

ITF is slightly closer to the original TKD founders ideas, sparring is generally semi contact wearing pads but head punching is OK.

It's pretty much politics at the end of it all (sadly like most martial arts).

Muay Thai or BJJ, from my own experience.

But its strongly dependant on which art you have access to and the quality of instruction at your chosen gym.

Just be wary of people offering MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) as an individual art this is incorrect as the name suggests!, This is quite common due to the booming popularity of MMA so watch out for the Mc Dojo's

Lols!!

I agree mrthingyx ; I went to a muay thai class this weekend but it was extremely dominated by jocks!!! But I enjoy the fighting style being upright. I seem to have a talent for kicking though having 39" legs are useful for something. :p

I may try another class elsewhere;

Any other suggestions for upright fighting style.

Where did you go? I go to Lumpini Gym in Southampton and I find the atmosphere there really good, everyone is friendly. They do a beginners Muay Thai course for £50 which lasts 6 weeks and teaches you the basics, I'd recommend starting via this method.

Hello People,

I'm considering taking up a martial art. Not only to keep fit but to gain confidence.

I like the combination of kicking and punching so I am told Tae Kwon Do might be a suitable choice.

My question to you all is; any recommendations?

Hello,

could not be asked to go through all messages here, but majority goes for Thai boxing, I would not agree with that!
While eyes are not completely closed and brain works at 59% will give u advise:p

I am doing martial arts since I am 7: karate, street fighting...tried TKW, Judo,Mya Thai, etc. ... Participated in tournaments and represented national team in Europe! 7 years in professional sport, now training at home, sometimes with thai boxing/karate mates!

For girl I would not suggest contact sport. I have many girls mates in martial arts: boxing/thai boxing ... no offense, but they look like a man. :p

Try none contact Karate - light, fast, combination's with kicks 'n' punches - more then I seen in other sports, discipline...list goes on..

Someone told about Kata, Kata is philosophy and people don't understand full potential of it!

For girl it would be perfect choice,.. however level in Karate comparing to Europe is poor, I suggest try different clubs!

Confidence is up to U, best way worked for me is sparing,sparing,sparing... However, even after years of training some people don't gain confidence!

It's all your commitment - years I trained with people who just spend money, don't gain nothing, not training and blame "style of martial art"

As for fitness for a girl jogging, light punches/ kicks at home is nice start up!

To be honest, I think this is complete tosh, I know a fair few girls that do high intensity MA, such as kickboxing, and they're far from "butch", they have athletic builds and are, in my opinion, very attractive.
