Martin O'Neill resigns

Damnit...if we had waited we could have had him instead of Roy Hodgson. :(

Big blow to Villa that, last thing you need mere days before the start of the season.

Rather have Roy. O'Neill is too petulant for my liking.

Mark Hughes must be gutted he went to Fulham now.

Bet they have sold Milner without talking to him first or for less than he would want for him.

I dont mind his petulance, I find that many petulant managers achieve good results. We've got Roy now and I will back him fully, but if you had asked me before we appointed him which one I would prefer I would have said O'neill

:o....really shocked by this..i wonder who there going to get in as all the decent managers are taken now eg Hughes,Hodgson....I though Villa were going to really well this year eg 5th/6th....

The curse of the Milner Transfer.

I was thinking much the same, and the second time think managers having a paddy at great deals.

Milner for Gutierez + 12.5mil or so, fantastic deal, a year or two at Villa and sell him on for around 15mil profit? Another fantastic deal, sometimes managers think they are more than they are, and so do fans.

I keep hearing about how owners should stay out of it and let managers do what they want, managers are just that, employed to do whatever the owners want frankly, of course they are free to leave(seemingly more so than players, yet contracts be damned for managers?) if they don't like whats going on.

Villa will be MUCH better off with 30mil, or 20ish + ireland, especially as they are quite noticeably lacking in the midfield creativity department and Milner is so massively over rated, 7 league goals, I'd take Ireland for the central role any day.

WHich Young are you all talking about aswell, I assume Luke Young, but maybe could understand if Ashley was being sold out from under him aswell.

But what does O'neill think, that Villa can really challenge for the title if just spending beyond their means, a sane manager should expect them to make money when they can, and only an insane manager wouldn't take up selling players for massively inflated wages when given the chance. I mean Wenger may not have wanted Toure anymore, but he wanted to keep Ade but 30mil for a player whose worth 10mil at best, you just have to be stupid to ignore that, as a manager I'd take 35mil over Ade, 20mil + for Milner lets you get a, better player, or a couple of better players, where is the issue?

In Youngs case, probably isn't worth much but honestly a team going for 4th should be looking for someone better anyway.

Downing and Young on the wings, Milner got pushed more infield when Downing got fit, where frankly, he's not as good, and they can get a significantly more promising central midfielder plus a huge wad of cash.

He's retarded to leave for those reasons. If he wants the challenge of a tougher team, getting a bottom 6 to top half of the table, thats fine, or manage in another league, or take on a bigger club thats all fine, but quitting over selling Milner, is just retarded.

American owners FTL. Wish they would all pack up and **** off back to where they came. None of them are interested in anything other than ****ing over the club they own for personal gain.

OMGWTFWALLOFTEXT

Why call him a retard for leaving for "those" reasons, when no one yet knows the real reasons he has left? Don't want to wait for the facts to obstruct your need for another rant?

Anyway... He will be a huge loss to Villa, and I can only really see Bob Bradley in, which would be a very poor replacement..

Probbaly fed up of having little money to spend this summer and be expected to "crack" the Sky four.

He was going to have to sell to buy this season, probably fed up that his best players were being sold from under him (Milner & A. Young) and felt that he needed to hold on to these players in order to maintain a push for the sky four.

I'm not sure why so many people say they're surprised. There's been talk of him walking out for the past 18 months.

He's realised he's taken Villa as far as he can and he's not the sort of manager that will just sit there and settle for mediocracy. Barry last year, Milner this year and Young will be next, and he knows there is nothing he can do to stop them leaving.

He us undoubtedly a huge loss to us :(. We may have been one dimensional tactically but the club is in much better shape than when he took it on, O'Leary left a horrible mess and slowly but surely he has turned it round.
To leave us so close to the start of the season cant have been an easy decision for him and it seems likely that the Milner deal has been done without him.

The one thing that puzzled me was his lack of faith in some of his own signings, bringing in known quantities like Knight, Sidwell, Harewood, Shorey, Maloney etc and never really giving them a chance. That little lot doesnt seem like the best way to spend 17 odd million unless youre putting together a chamionship side.

....

Who knows for sure but I've heard he wasn't going to get the money from the transfers to reinvest in the squad. Seems unlikely but could understand him quitting in that scenario
